Full Description:
In our neighbouring country of Mozambique we find Maputo (formerly Lourenco Marques), the capital of this fast growing nation. After many years of civil war, Maputo is now recovering its former glory and has re-emerged as a vibrant and resourceful city.
Our tour starts with a short drive to the Lebombo border past for immigration formalities. Please note that foreign tourists require a day visa which costs approximately R892 and is not included in the tour charge. Please also ensure that you are in possession of a valid passport, otherwise you will be refused entry to Mozambique.
Once through immigration, we proceed East to Maputo – a drive of 100 kilometres which takes around 1.5 hour). Some of our highlights include:
- Breakfast at a local Portuguese bakery
- Municipal Council Building
- Maputo Cathedral
- Tunduru Botanical Gardens
- Samora Machel Statue
- Iron House
After a busy morning, it is time to sample the local fare at the famous Costa Do Sol Restaurant, known for its fresh seafood. Refreshed and replete, we now drive down the scenic palm-lined beachfront on our way to more of the local attractions:
- The Fortress – “Nossa Senhora da Conceicao”
- Maputo Railway Station
- Praca dos Trabalhadores and War Memorial
With our day drawing to a close it is now time for the hour’s drive back to the Lebombo border and then back “home” for another peaceful evening under the African stars. We aim to have you back at your accommodation in the late afternoon or early evening. Our drop off times will vary depending on how much time we spend at each of the museums and other places of interest.
